How to Update Your LLC Business Address: State-by-State Guide
How to Update Your Business Address with the State of Ohio
If your business is registered with Ohio and you've moved to a new address, you need to file a formal amendment with the state. This is not optional—Ohio requires businesses to keep their registered address current, and failing to do so can result in missed legal notices, fines, or loss of good standing.
The process depends on what type of business entity you are. Most small businesses are either sole proprietorships, LLCs, or corporations. Each has a slightly different filing path.
For Limited Liability Companies (LLCs)
Ohio LLCs file an amendment form called the Articles of Amendment with the Ohio Secretary of State. Here's what you do:
- Go to the Ohio Secretary of State website at sos.ohio.gov
- Download the Articles of Amendment for a Limited Liability Company (Form 534)
- Fill in your LLC name, your EIN (Employer Identification Number), and the new address under "Purpose of Amendment"
- Sign the form—the person signing must be an authorized member or manager
- Mail the signed form to: Ohio Secretary of State, Business Services Division, 30 E. Broad Street, Columbus, OH 43215
- Include the filing fee (currently $39 for an amendment) as a check or money order
- Processing typically takes 1-2 weeks by mail
If you want faster processing, the Secretary of State accepts online filing through their business filing portal. This takes 2-3 business days and costs the same fee.
For Corporations
Ohio corporations follow a similar process but use the Articles of Amendment for a Corporation (Form 532). The steps are the same: download, fill in the new address, sign, and file with the Secretary of State. The fee is also $39.
For Sole Proprietorships
If you're a sole proprietor filing under a "doing business as" (DBA) name, you may have registered this with your county clerk's office rather than the state. Check with your county recorder to confirm where your DBA is filed, then update it there. Some counties allow online filing; others require in-person or mail filing. There is usually a small fee ($10-$25).
What You'll Need Before You Start
- Your business legal name exactly as registered with Ohio
- Your EIN (from your IRS paperwork)
- The new complete address
- The filing fee ($39 for amendments, payable by check or through online payment if filing electronically)
- An authorized person to sign the amendment (typically an owner, member, or officer)
After You File
Once your amendment is accepted, update your address everywhere else too: your business bank account, your registered agent (if you use one), your business licenses with the county or city, your tax filings with the IRS and Ohio Department of Taxation, and your professional licenses if applicable. The Secretary of State filing is the formal step, but the business world needs to know your address is updated too.
Keep a copy of your filed amendment for your records. The Secretary of State will send you confirmation once it's processed.
Get It Done Faster
If you have multiple compliance tasks to handle—address changes, annual filings, license renewals—or if you're unsure whether your LLC is in good standing with Ohio, an LLC Compliance Audit can show you what's missing and what's current for $39. It's a simple scan of your Ohio registration against state records, nothing more—useful if you want to know the full picture before you file.
